This group has been recognized as best of its kind by international scientific community. They have played a major role in increasing mountain gorilla population by 17% over last 20 years. Mountain gorillas are highly susceptible to human disease, so setting protocols for human interaction is critical. Veterinarians work to protect the mountain gorillas and have successfully managed several disease outbreaks that could have severely reduced entire population. In 1988, a respiratory outbreak (thought to be from measles), led to immunization of 85 gorillas.
